Option A
Pursue counselling psychology / organisational psychology practice — valid with MA alone, no MPhil required for most roles
Why this works: School counsellors, corporate wellness counsellors, NGO mental health workers, and HR L&D professionals all work with MA Psychology without MPhil. iCall, Vandrevala Foundation, NIMHANS helplines and corporate EAP (Employee Assistance Programs) are actively hiring MA graduates. Growing sector with good pay.
Effort change: Same degree base — different career track, no additional exam required
Salary impact: Counselling track entry ₹3–5L vs clinical psychology ₹5–8L. Gap narrows with experience. Corporate OD/HR roles can reach ₹15–25L at senior levels.
Most mental health work in India is done by MA-level counsellors, not MPhil clinical psychologists. Your degree is valid and your work is needed.
Option B
Reapply for MPhil at alternative RCI-recognised institutes: IHBAS Delhi, LGBRIMH Tezpur, CIP Ranchi, or private institutes like Amity, Manipal — all offer RCI-recognised MPhil programs
Why this works: NIMHANS is the gold standard but not the only path. IHBAS Delhi, Central Institute of Psychiatry Ranchi, LGBRIMH Tezpur, and several private institutions are RCI-recognised and produce competent clinical psychologists. The RCI licence — not the institute name — is what enables clinical practice.
Effort change: Same level of effort — reapplying while working as MA-level counsellor
Salary impact: Clinical psychology salaries are similar regardless of which RCI-recognised institute granted the MPhil.
